Mayfield residents urged to join stop smoking programme
HSE South West is encouraging smokers in Mayfield and nearby communities to take a decisive step towards a smoke-free life by enrolling in a 10-week Stop Smoking Programme commencing this October. The course will be held at the Kerrigan Tyrell Centre every Wednesday evening from 6.30pm to 8pm, running from 14 October until 16 December 2026.

This programme forms part of the HSE's national Quit Month campaign, which motivates individuals to remain smoke-free for 28 days—a milestone shown to significantly increase the chances of quitting permanently. Marion O’Reilly, Senior Health Promotion Officer and Healthy Communities Co-Ordinator with HSE South West, emphasised the health and financial benefits: "Quitting smoking is one of the best decisions you can make for your wellbeing. Whether this is your first attempt or one of many, this 10-week programme offers essential support to help you succeed. A typical smoker consuming 20 cigarettes daily could save approximately €7,000 annually, with prices expected to rise further after the 2027 budget. Quit Month provides the perfect opportunity to begin this positive change."

Participation in the programme is free, but places are limited and booking is required. Those interested can reserve their spot by calling 085 761 3187 or emailing [email protected]. The organisers welcome feedback to enhance future iterations of the programme, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement and community wellbeing.
