Laois unites cultures through food and climate dialogue
The "One Table One Planet" gathering took place at the Compass Hub (Connect Laois) in Portlaoise on Sunday, 18 October 2026, as part of the Laois Climate Action Festival 2026. This inclusive, free drop-in event united local residents to share traditional foods and engage in meaningful conversations about pressing global environmental issues.

Attendees savoured an array of dishes from Filipino, Pakistani, Afghan, Nigerian, Mauritian, Brazilian, Ukrainian, and Irish cultures. Aga Wypychowska, Integration Support Worker with Laois County Council's Integration Team, highlighted the event's significance in fostering connection and collective environmental awareness. She remarked on how sharing a meal breaks down barriers and reinforces the community’s shared responsibility towards climate action beyond local borders.

Cassia O'Neill, New Arrivals Coordinator at Connect Laois, expressed gratitude to volunteers and partners who made the event possible, reflecting on how simple acts like sharing food can create powerful bonds. The occasion also featured inspiring insights from guest speaker Blessings Banda, who shared his experiences with rural Zambian communities tackling climate change, emphasising the global dimension of local environmental efforts.
