Winter vaccines urged across West and North West
The Health Service Executive’s West and North West region has launched its winter vaccination programme, offering free flu and COVID‑19 jabs to protect the community as the season approaches. Regional Director Dr Áine McNamara urged everyone eligible to take advantage of the vaccines, highlighting their role in preventing serious illness and hospitalisation.

People aged 60 and over, as well as anyone six months old with an underlying condition or a weakened immune system, are advised to receive both vaccines. Children aged 2 to 17, pregnant women and healthcare staff are also recommended to get the flu jab, with an enhanced formulation available for those over 65. The nasal spray flu vaccine remains needle‑free and is provided through GPs, pharmacies and school‑based programmes, while mobile teams will visit nursing homes and housebound individuals.

Vaccines can be obtained at participating general practices, pharmacies or dedicated clinics; further information is available on the HSE website or by calling HSELive on 1800 700 700. Last winter saw over 5,900 flu‑related hospital admissions nationwide, underscoring the importance of vaccination this year.
