HSE urges caution and care this October bank holiday
The Health Service Executive (HSE) for the West and North West regions has issued important advice to residents in Galway and Roscommon ahead of the October bank holiday weekend. They emphasise the importance of road safety and remind the public to slow down and take care, as emergency departments (EDs) typically experience higher attendances during holiday periods.

For those with breaks, sprains, or minor wounds, the Roscommon injury unit will be open daily from 8am to 8pm and provides services including X-rays without requiring appointments. Non-urgent cases are encouraged to seek help through these units or consult their local pharmacy, which offers expert advice on common conditions. Additionally, the Westdoc out-of-hours GP service will be available all weekend for urgent medical needs, but appointments must be made in advance by calling (0818) 360 000.

HSE Integrated Healthcare Area Manager Ann Cosgrove highlighted that while EDs will prioritise patients based on clinical need, wait times for non-urgent cases may be extended. The HSE also urges everyone to keep vaccinations, particularly for flu and COVID-19, up to date to reduce risks this winter. Mental health support remains vital, with resources such as the free 50808 text service, YourMentalHealth.ie, and a 24/7 helpline at (1800) 111 888 available to anyone seeking assistance. The HSE concludes by wishing the public a safe and healthy bank holiday weekend.
