The Health Service Executive has officially launched its 2026-2027 winter vaccination initiative in Kilkenny, aiming to bolster public immunity against serious respiratory illness. This proactive measure follows a challenging previous season, which saw 25,000 confirmed flu cases, nearly 6,000 hospital admissions, and a significant number of intensive care unit interventions across Ireland.
Health officials are prioritising those aged 60 and over, as well as individuals with compromised immune systems or underlying medical conditions, for both flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. Furthermore, the programme encompasses healthcare staff, expectant mothers, and children aged between 2 and 17, with the latter group eligible for a nasal flu vaccine. These services are provided free of charge at participating pharmacies and GP practices, with dedicated mobile teams supporting residential care settings and housebound patients.
Dr Carmel Mullaney, Regional Director of Public Health for the Dublin and South East region, emphasised the necessity of these vaccinations to mitigate health risks as temperatures drop. Residents are advised to consult their local GP or pharmacist to arrange an appointment, or alternatively, visit the official HSE website for comprehensive information regarding eligibility and clinic locations.
