HSE commences winter vaccination drive across County Wicklow
The Health Service Executive has officially rolled out its 2026-2027 winter vaccination programme in Wicklow, aiming to bolster public immunity against circulating respiratory viruses. With the onset of colder weather, health authorities are prioritising the administration of both flu and COVID-19 vaccines to vulnerable populations to prevent the severe health complications observed in previous years.

Data from the previous winter season highlighted the necessity of this initiative, as thousands of individuals required hospitalisation due to influenza. Under the new guidance, those aged 60 and older, pregnant women, healthcare personnel, and individuals with chronic medical conditions are strongly advised to receive their boosters. Additionally, the programme features a complimentary nasal spray vaccine for children between the ages of 2 and 17, ensuring comprehensive coverage for families throughout the community.

Vaccinations are currently being facilitated through local general practitioners and pharmacies, with dedicated outreach teams visiting residential care settings and housebound patients. Dr Carmel Mullaney, Regional Director of Public Health for the Dublin and South East region, emphasised the critical importance of these measures in safeguarding public health. Residents seeking further details or wishing to schedule an appointment are encouraged to consult their local medical provider or visit the official HSE website.
