Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran TD today unveiled an additional €1.077 million in funding to support interim flood mitigation works across East Cork. The allocation, drawn from the OPW’s revised Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, will target Mogeely, Castlemartyr, Rathcormac and Ballintubber, where communities remain vulnerable to seasonal flooding. Speaking at a meeting with local representatives, the Minister emphasised the urgency of these measures, noting that they form part of a broader €14 million investment programme designed to safeguard homes and businesses in the region.
The funding will enable detailed studies and immediate interventions, including drainage improvements in Ballintubber and hydrological modelling in Rathcormac, to identify short-term solutions while longer-term flood relief schemes progress. This latest tranche follows €1.35 million previously allocated to East Cork, bringing the total support under the scheme to €2.427 million for the area. Minister Moran acknowledged the ongoing hardship faced by residents, stating that the measures aim to provide practical relief ahead of the completion of more comprehensive flood relief projects.
Looking ahead, the Government’s commitment extends further, with €5.8 million already earmarked to install over 2,000 property-level flood defences for 700 households by November. An additional €5.8 million is also advancing preparatory works in Tir Cluain, Midleton, where construction is set to begin next spring to protect 135 properties. Meanwhile, Cork County Council is finalising planning documents for the Midleton Flood Relief Scheme, expected to be submitted to An Coimisiún Pleanála by year-end, with completion anticipated in 2031.
