Farmers urged to learn about arthritis risks and care
A landmark online event is set to empower farmers and their families with vital knowledge on arthritis as World Arthritis Day approaches. The free webinar, hosted by Arthritis Ireland in partnership with Teagasc, will take place on Monday 12 October at 5.00pm, offering a lifeline to those navigating the challenges of joint health in a physically demanding profession.

Consultant rheumatologist Dr Joe Devlin will join a farmer living with the condition to share expert insights and lived experience. Together, they will guide attendees through recognising early symptoms, distinguishing between inflammatory and non-inflammatory forms of arthritis, and the critical importance of timely diagnosis and treatment. Practical strategies—including movement, exercise, weight management, and equipment adaptations—will be explored to safeguard long-term mobility and quality of life.

The session will also delve into the stark realities facing Irish farmers, where musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) remain a leading cause of disability and lost income. Research reveals that 57% of farmers have lost full-time workdays due to MSDs, with lower back, knee, and hip pain disproportionately affecting their ability to work. Gráinne O’Leary, Chief Executive of Arthritis Ireland, emphasised the urgency of the conversation: “The physical toll of farming on joint health cannot be overstated. This webinar is designed to equip our farming community with the tools they need to protect their health and sustain their livelihoods.”
