Empowering rural women to transform food systems
The 'Land Citizenship: Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All' event, jointly hosted by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and Teagasc, took place as part of Ireland’s EU Council Presidency. This two-day roadshow, linked to the COREnet Horizon Europe project, brought together farmers, advisors, researchers, policymakers, and rural organisations from across Europe to explore innovative models of sustainable farming led by women.

Participants visited key ‘Golden Cases’ such as Airfield Farm and Burren Beef, alongside ‘Lighthouse Projects’ like the Western Organic Producer Organisation, highlighting the vital role of advisory supports and policy schemes under Ireland’s CAP Strategic Plan 2023-2027. Elisa Goode from DAFM emphasised how these examples demonstrate women’s leadership in short food supply chains and sustainable agri-food systems, fostering gender inclusivity and farm diversification.

The second day featured a symposium in Galway addressing agroecology, sustainable livestock systems, and policy innovation. Experts including Dr Áine Macken-Walsh and Professor Bina Agarwal discussed how women’s collaborative roles in family farming can drive sustainability and equality. The event combined research insights, creative expressions, and systemic mapping sessions to underline the transformative impact of empowered women in agriculture, both in Ireland and internationally.
