Communities across Donegal are preparing to host a vibrant schedule of events to mark National Breastfeeding Week, running from 1 to 7 October. This year's campaign, themed 'Every step forward: Strengthening support for babies and families', will showcase the vital role that timely guidance and expert care play in helping parents navigate their early parenting experiences.
Recent national figures indicate positive progress, showing that more than six in 10 babies in Ireland are now breastfed at birth, alongside notable increases in continuation rates at three months of age. To sustain this momentum, the HSE has significantly expanded local assistance networks by appointing specialist lactation nurses, establishing community support groups, and introducing enhanced training programmes for healthcare professionals across the country.
Mary McFeely, a community public health nurse and lactation consultant in Donegal, emphasised that families do not have to travel their feeding journey alone. Local mothers are encouraged to connect with these community initiatives to build confidence, share experiences, and access reliable guidance right on their doorstep.
