Minister of State for Older People, Kieran O’Donnell, has announced a record-breaking €3.4 billion investment package as part of Budget 2027. This substantial financial commitment is designed to strengthen both community and residential care, ensuring that older people across Ireland receive the essential support required to maintain their independence and quality of life.
A cornerstone of this programme is the provision of 1.8 million additional home support hours, bringing the total annual target to 28.5 million hours. Furthermore, the Fair Deal scheme will receive an extra €97 million to assist the nursing home sector in managing inflationary costs while extending support to an additional 500 individuals. These measures are intended to alleviate pressure on families and facilitate care within the home environment.
The budget also places a significant emphasis on dementia care, with a commitment to allocate at least 24% of new home support hours to those living with the condition. Additional funding has been earmarked for vital community services such as Meals on Wheels, day centres, and the Care and Repair Scheme. Further details regarding these services and eligibility criteria are available on the official Department of Health website.
