Teagasc is set to host its annual Soil Health Week from 21 to 25 September 2026, aiming to spotlight the critical role of soil quality in Irish food production and environmental stability. The initiative will bring together farmers, researchers, and the public through a series of practical demonstrations, school-based events, and online webinars focused on long-term land management.
Dr Fiona Brennan, a research officer at Johnstown Castle, emphasised that the week serves to acknowledge the significant efforts already undertaken by farmers to improve soil resilience. Specialist Veronica Nyhan noted that the programme is particularly timely, given the recent challenges posed by extreme weather conditions, and seeks to provide participants with the necessary skills to assess and protect their land for future generations.
Events are scheduled across the country, including a farm walk in County Meath, a tillage demonstration in Carlow with Hugh McDonnell, and an organic farming session in Leitrim hosted by Barry and Sharon O’Hagan.
