The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM) is actively coordinating efforts as Storm Boelo continues to batter much of Ireland with severe weather. This latest meeting of the National Severe Weather and Flood Coordination Group updated stakeholders on the storm’s trajectory, which is currently moving northwards, bringing significant disruption.
Heavy rainfall overnight and into Saturday morning particularly affected the west, saturating the ground and raising river levels dangerously. While the rain has eased, powerful winds are expected to intensify, especially in counties such as Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo, where an Orange wind warning remains effective until 9am on Sunday. Gale-force gusts pose a serious threat to these areas, with additional yellow wind warnings in place across other counties.
Authorities have also issued a High Tide Advisory for the northwest coast, warning that the combination of strong onshore winds, high tides, storm surge, and large waves could lead to coastal flooding and wave overtopping. Local severe weather teams are fully activated, ready to respond swiftly to any emergencies. Keith Leonard, head of NDFEM, stressed the critical need for caution, advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel, keep phones charged, and prepare for possible power outages. The group will reconvene on Sunday to monitor developments closely and coordinate further responses.
