Celebrating South Dublin’s vibrant biodiversity events
South Dublin recently came alive with vibrant biodiversity celebrations, as two well-attended weekend events showcased the area’s natural wonders. Organised by Claire Hamilton and Codie Preston, with support from Rathfarnham Village Tidy Towns, South Dublin County Council (SDCC), and IPB Insurance through the LEAF 2026 initiative, these gatherings brought together locals eager to connect with nature.

At Sean Walsh Park, over 25 participants honed their bird-spotting skills during the Native Bird Event. Highlights included spotting the elusive kingfisher alongside familiar species such as mute swans, grey herons, moorhens, and coots. Attendees also delighted in the melodious songs of house sparrows, long-tailed tits, wrens, and robins, fostering a greater appreciation for native avian life.

Meanwhile, in Dodder Valley Park, another group of more than 25 participants engaged with the River & Biodiversity Event. Guided by expert facilitators, they identified river macroinvertebrates, explored the fascinating world of dragonflies and damselflies, and connected the River Dodder’s source to the rich folklore of Tír na nÓg. These experiences blended science, heritage, and hands-on learning, inspiring community members to cherish and protect the natural environment on their doorstep.

A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who took part in the seven biodiversity events held across recent weeks. The enthusiasm and curiosity shown by families and nature lovers alike have truly enriched South Dublin’s community spirit. For those interested in future opportunities to engage with local wildlife, updates will be available soon on SDCC’s social media channels.
