International experts explore organic farming in Ireland
In late September, farmers, advisers, and researchers from seven countries convened in Ireland for a Teagasc-hosted cross-visit under the OH-FINE Horizon Europe project, aimed at enhancing the creation and application of organic farming knowledge. This 48-month initiative involves over 100 case-study farms across five countries, including established organic producers and those transitioning or considering conversion.

The visit commenced at Tommy Delahunt’s farm in County Wicklow, an OH-FINE case study site where two field trials are underway. Attendees examined early results from trials on pea/bean intercropping ratios and organic fodder maize. They also observed machinery from the Organic Tillage and Vegetable (OTV) EIP project designed to assist in organic weed management.

Subsequent visits included the Teagasc organic beef demonstration farm in Kildavin, where research on production costs and organic weanling performance was presented, highlighting multi-species swards and alternative finishing diets. The tour continued at Airfield Estate in Dublin, illustrating organic farming’s role in tourism and education, and concluded at the McNally family farm, which demonstrated innovative organic horticulture techniques and marketing strategies. Participants praised the collaborative spirit of Ireland’s organic sector and the integral support provided by Teagasc’s advisory and research services.
