Public invited to comment on school safety plans
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has launched a consultation inviting residents to share their views on proposed School Zones as part of the Safe Routes to School Programme, developed in partnership with the National Transport Authority (NTA). The scheme intends to create safer and more accessible environments for children walking and cycling to school.

For Our Lady’s Girls’ and Boys’ National Schools in Ballinteer, the proposals include continuous footpaths across entrances, raised zebra crossings, traffic calming measures, junction improvements, upgraded crossings, and additional planting to enhance safety and aesthetics. Similarly, Dominican College Sion Hill in Blackrock will see new pedestrian and cycling routes, a relocated bus set-down area, improved signage, and better footpaths on nearby side roads.

A 2023 parent survey reflected overwhelming support, with over 90% endorsing these safety improvements. The public can attend upcoming drop-in information sessions and submit their feedback by Monday, 23 November 2026. Submissions must include a name and address and will be considered in the Chief Executive’s report presented to elected officials, though personal contact details will remain confidential.
