Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien officially launched the Public Transport Safety Charter, a comprehensive framework designed to enhance safety, security, and respect on Ireland’s public transport system. Developed by the Public Transport Security Working Group since 2024, the Charter emerged from extensive consultations with transport operators, unions, commuter groups, and An Garda Síochána, reflecting a unified national effort.
The Charter aims to create safer and more respectful travel conditions by addressing anti-social behaviour through consistent and visible measures. These include improved lighting at stations, upgraded CCTV systems, help points, and clear reporting channels for incidents. Alongside the Charter launch, Minister O’Brien also unveiled the "Respect the People Behind Every Journey" campaign at Heuston Station, promoting mutual respect between passengers and staff across the Transport for Ireland network.
Minister O’Brien emphasised the Government’s ongoing commitment to securing public transport, highlighting progress towards establishing a dedicated Transport Security Force. He acknowledged the vital contributions of frontline workers and stakeholders in fostering a safe environment. The Charter complements existing initiatives, encouraging collaboration with communities and law enforcement to ensure public transport remains welcoming and secure for everyone. The full Charter is accessible on the Department of Transport’s official website.
