Discover the stories behind Ireland’s place names
Have you ever paused to wonder about the Irish name of your destination and its significance? Transport for Ireland is inviting travellers to explore the fascinating stories behind the places served by its extensive bus, train, and Luas network through a new series of Irish language explainers.

The campaign’s inaugural highlight is Baile Átha Cliath, translating as “town of the hurdled ford.” This name harkens back to a time when woven wooden hurdles enabled early crossings of the River Liffey, marking the area as a historic point of connection long before modern transport existed.

By pairing scenes from Dublin’s past with today’s TFI network, the campaign celebrates the Irish language and its enduring presence in daily life. Over the coming year, it will unveil more captivating tales of place names at bus shelters, on public transport, and across social media, encouraging everyone to see their travels through a new lens rich with cultural meaning.
