Galway city ring road judicial reviews resolved
The judicial review proceedings linked to the Galway City Ring Road have been officially withdrawn following a period of constructive mediation, a significant step welcomed by the Ministers for Transport and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). These reviews had challenged the planning approval granted by An Coimisiún Pleanála, and their resolution removes the necessity for a full High Court hearing, providing much-needed certainty for the project's advancement.

Designated as critical infrastructure under the Critical Infrastructure Act of 2026, the Galway City Ring Road project is recognised for its vital role in improving transport links around Galway. Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien emphasised the Government’s commitment to this transformative scheme, highlighting that it is the first road project in the State to receive such designation, which obliges public bodies to expedite decision-making processes.

Minister of State Seán Canney praised the positive outcome of the mediation, noting the project’s importance in reducing city centre congestion, supporting public transport and active travel, and enhancing regional connectivity. Lorcan O’Connor, CEO of TII, described the withdrawal as a milestone that brings the scheme closer to delivery. The Galway City Ring Road, stretching approximately 17.5km including a new River Corrib bridge, will connect the N6 at Coolagh to the Ballymoneen Road and beyond, facilitating efficient movement for people and goods across Galway and the wider western region. The project will now move forward to the pre-tender stage, including finalising the Procurement Strategy as per Infrastructure Guidelines.
