Wexford Festival Opera enriches HSE care homes
As the curtain fell on this year’s Wexford Festival Opera in October, a special workshop was brought to life within the walls of St. John’s Community Hospital in Enniscorthy for HSE residents and service users. The event, held in the Oak Ward Day Room, welcomed attendees from the hospital itself, alongside participants from the local Mental Health Services and Residential Intellectual Disability Services.

The workshop was expertly facilitated by Elizabeth Drwal, Education Outreach Co-ordinator with Wexford Festival Opera, alongside baritone singer Timothy Mays, who recently featured as a rising star in the festival’s acclaimed productions. Their combined talents created an engaging, interactive environment filled with group sing-alongs and artistic expression that delighted all involved.

This initiative follows a September concert at St. John’s, part of the ‘Synapses’ outreach programme, where singers Vlad Sima and Charlotte Baker, accompanied by pianist Rebecca Warren, performed in the Creative Activity Garden — a community space within the hospital complex designed for wellbeing activities. Advance Nurse Practitioner Mick Mahon praised the collaboration’s positive impact on patients, staff, and families, expressing eagerness to continue this successful partnership in 2027. The project was generously supported by Wexford County Council through its Arts Office and the Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme, highlighting the power of arts in health and community engagement.
