Celebrating 25 years of stroke rehabilitation progress
Letterkenny University Hospital is proudly commemorating 25 years since the establishment of its specialist stroke and medical rehabilitation service at St Conal’s Campus in Donegal. The service operates from a purpose-built 19-bed unit designed to support patients recovering from stroke and other acute illnesses requiring extended rehabilitation.

Opened in its current form on 1 October 2021, the unit features a fully equipped physiotherapy gym, dedicated occupational therapy spaces, speech and language therapy, plus access to medical social work and a discharge liaison team. Its primary mission is to provide patients with the time, expert care, and support necessary to regain independence and return home when possible.

The vision for this service came from Professor Ken Mulpeter, who recognised the importance of a specialised rehabilitation facility beyond acute hospital care. Collaborating with Clare McAleer, the first Unit Manager who researched best practices across the UK and Ireland, they developed a multidisciplinary care model that remains central today. The dedicated team now includes consultants, nurses, therapists, healthcare assistants, and support staff who together have made a tangible difference in the lives of hundreds of patients. As the unit looks forward to the coming years, it remains committed to upholding the highest standards of rehabilitation and patient-centred care.
