Essential water safety tips for October bank holiday
With the October Bank Holiday weekend upon us, Water Safety Ireland, the Irish Coast Guard, and the RNLI have issued important advice for those enjoying Westmeath’s lakes, rivers, and surrounding waters. These organisations emphasise the need for vigilance when spending time near water, especially as conditions become more challenging in autumn.

Visitors and locals are reminded to avoid entering the water during stormy weather or when strong winds, waves, or currents are present. It is crucial to swim only in recognised safe areas and never alone. Given that the lifeguard season has ended and daylight hours are shorter, swimmers should plan to exit the water well before dusk.

As temperatures fall, the dangers of cold-water shock and hypothermia increase, potentially reducing swimming ability. Wearing suitable safety equipment such as wetsuits, brightly coloured swim caps, and tow floats is strongly recommended. In emergencies, dial 112 or use Marine VHF Channel 16 to contact the Coast Guard. Everyone is encouraged to enjoy the Bank Holiday responsibly and prioritise water safety.
