Minister urges public to check free GP card eligibility
Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has announced a series of strategic improvements aimed at streamlining the application process for GP Visit Cards. This initiative follows research indicating that a significant number of people avoid visiting their doctor due to cost concerns, despite being eligible for state-funded support. By addressing these barriers, the Department of Health hopes to ensure that those entitled to free care can access it without unnecessary administrative hurdles.

The core of the new system is an intuitive pre-application calculator now available on the MyMedicalCard website. Developed in response to an audit by the Irish Government Economic and Evaluation Service, the tool allows individuals to quickly assess their eligibility for both GP Visit Cards and Medical Cards. This evidence-based approach aligns with international best practices to reduce complexity and improve the user experience for the public.

Minister Carroll MacNeill emphasised that expanding access to primary care remains a fundamental objective of the Sláintecare programme. Citizens who suspect they may qualify are encouraged to visit the official online portal to verify their status and complete their application. By simplifying these procedures, the government aims to remove the uncertainty that has previously prevented many households from claiming the healthcare benefits to which they are entitled.
