Kildare County Council is actively encouraging homeowners to take advantage of the Domestic Lead Remediation Grant Scheme, which offers financial support for replacing lead pipes and related fittings inside domestic water systems. This initiative, supported by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, seeks to minimise the health risks associated with lead-contaminated drinking water.
Lead pipes were commonly installed in Irish homes until the 1970s, and some properties may still have these hazardous materials in their internal plumbing. Replacing these pipes is the most effective method to reduce lead exposure and enhance water safety. The scheme is exclusively available to private residences that serve as the applicant’s principal home; long-term tenants require permission from property owners to apply. Exclusions apply to holiday homes, commercial properties, and those owned by local authorities, housing associations, or the Health Service Executive (HSE).
The grant covers the full cost of eligible works ranging from €750 to €5,000, with no support for jobs under €750. Applicants must submit proof that lead piping requires replacement, which can be provided via a notification from Uisce Éireann, a certificate from an accredited laboratory, or confirmation from a registered building professional. For further details, including application forms and guidance, residents can visit Kildare County Council’s website or contact the Rural Water Office by phone at 045-980361 or via email at [email protected].
Additionally, households with lead pipes located outside their property boundaries are advised to use Uisce Éireann's Customer Opt-In Lead Pipe Replacement Scheme, which replaces public-side lead pipes free of charge. Relevant information and resources are also available on government and HSE websites.
