Kildare County Council is urging householders reliant on private water sources to consider the Domestic Well Grant Scheme, supported by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. The initiative aims to ensure that domestic water supplies are both safe and sufficient to meet household needs, by funding new wells, repairs to existing borewells, or the installation of water treatment systems.
The scheme offers significant financial aid: 85% of approved costs up to €3,000 for rehabilitating existing borewells, 85% up to €5,000 for drilling new wells where deemed necessary by housing authorities, and full funding up to €1,000 for upgrading or installing water treatment systems. It is important to note that the minimum spend qualifying for the grant is €750.
Eligibility criteria require that the water supply has failed to meet regulatory quality standards or lacks sufficient quantity, that the property is the applicant’s primary residence, and that it cannot reasonably be connected to public water supplies such as Uisce Éireann or a private Group Water Scheme. Applications must be submitted to the Rural Water Office at Kildare County Council prior to any works commencing, including a completed PWS1a form and three quotations. Further details and application forms are available on the council’s website or by contacting the Rural Water Office directly.
