Galway to receive extended high visibility policing patrols
The Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O'Callaghan, has announced the launch of a permanent High Visibility Policing Plan in Galway City and Salthill as of Wednesday, 12 August 2026. This plan increases the Gardaí's visible presence, with up to 13 officers assigned daily to patrol seven identified locations from 8:00 am until 4:00 am.

These patrols are conducted by Gardaí from both Galway Garda Station and Salthill/Bóthar na Trá Garda Station, focusing on areas selected through detailed analysis of crime patterns, calls for service, and community feedback. The heightened Garda presence aims to address public order offences, anti-social behaviour, drug dealing, aggressive begging, and shoplifting, with a robust enforcement strategy including a pro-arrest policy and firm bail objections for repeat offenders.

Minister O'Callaghan emphasised the Government’s commitment to ensuring Galway remains a safe and welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors. The initiative follows the success of similar deployments in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Tallaght, and Dún Laoghaire, which led to reductions in crime and increased community reassurance. The plan is supported by the recent allocation of 28 additional Garda members to the Galway Division and the attestation of 206 new Garda recruits in July 2026. Additionally, Community Policing Units will continue deploying the Garda Community Engagement Van to foster public engagement and provide crime prevention advice throughout Galway City.
