The Health Service Executive has officially initiated its 2026-2027 winter vaccination programme in Carlow, marking a vital step in preparing the community for the colder months. Following a challenging previous season that saw 25,000 flu cases and 6,000 hospitalisations, the initiative aims to bolster public immunity against respiratory illnesses that continue to place significant pressure on the national healthcare system.
Priority groups for the dual vaccination programme include those aged 60 and over, individuals with chronic medical conditions, and those with compromised immune systems. Furthermore, the HSE advises that healthcare workers, pregnant women, and children between the ages of 2 and 17 receive the flu vaccine. These immunisations are provided free of charge and can be administered during a single visit to participating general practitioners or local pharmacies.
Dr Carmel Mullaney, Regional Director of Public Health for the Dublin and South East region, emphasised the importance of these preventative measures in protecting the most vulnerable members of society. In addition to community-based options, dedicated teams will facilitate vaccinations for residents in care facilities and those unable to leave their homes. Further guidance on eligibility and booking appointments is available on the official HSE website.
