Gardaí to scale back overtime after busy year
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly confirmed in Cavan that overtime for Gardaí will be reduced soon, addressing concerns raised by the Garda Representative Association regarding excessive working hours. He acknowledged that this year has seen extraordinary demands on personnel, including the visit of former US President Donald Trump, numerous significant investigations, and the responsibilities tied to Ireland’s EU Presidency.

Commissioner Kelly explained that discussions with Deputy Commissioner Policing Operations have led to an agreement to limit overtime following the conclusion of major upcoming events, notably the European Political Community (EPC) summit scheduled for mid-November. This decision aims to ease the workload on Garda personnel while maintaining operational effectiveness.

Praising the Gardaí’s commitment, the Commissioner highlighted the professionalism displayed throughout the EU Presidency period. He also noted the positive feedback received from government officials, state agencies, and international policing partners, underscoring the force’s dedication during a demanding year.
