Ireland’s first nurse-led post-stroke hypertension clinic opens
University Hospital Limerick has introduced Ireland’s inaugural nurse-led Post-Stroke Hypertension Clinic, designed to enhance secondary prevention and maintain long-term blood-pressure control for patients recovering from stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA).

Officially launched by Minister of State for Older People and Housing Kieran O’Donnell on World Stroke Day, the clinic highlights the critical need for early intervention and ongoing support after hospital discharge. With stroke rates in Ireland expected to rise by almost 60% by 2035, this service addresses a pressing public health challenge by targeting hypertension, the leading modifiable risk factor for recurrent stroke.

Under the leadership of Advanced Nurse Practitioner Nora Cunningham, the clinic offers patient education, home monitoring tools, and routine assessments conducted by the hospital’s stroke team. The service aligns with the National Stroke Strategy’s objective to standardise post-discharge care. Key figures including Dr Catherine Peters, Prof Ronan Collins, and Ian Carter emphasise how this innovative, patient-centred model strengthens continuity of care, empowers individuals to manage their condition, and embodies best practice guidelines for hypertension management across Ireland.
