Funding secured for Ballymote flood and coastal works
The Office of Public Works (OPW) has granted €67,500 to Sligo County Council for flood mitigation and coastal protection initiatives in Ballymote, Co. Sligo. This funding will finance clearance activities on the Carrigen’s upper stream, including vegetation removal, clearing of culverts, and disposal of debris to enhance water flow and reduce flood risk.

Introduced in 2009, the Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme supports local authorities in addressing small-scale flooding and coastal challenges swiftly and effectively. Since its inception, Sligo County Council has benefited from 19 funded projects under this programme, demonstrating ongoing commitment to safeguarding communities.

While local authorities oversee the commencement and progress of works, the OPW ensures that such interventions do not exacerbate flood risk elsewhere. For more details or inquiries, the OPW press office is reachable via email at [email protected], and updates can be found on their official social media channels and website dedicated to flood information and project listings.
