The Enniscorthy Cardiac Rehabilitation Service, part of the HSE’s Chronic Disease Services, is transforming lives by aiding individuals recovering from cardiac incidents to lead active, healthier lifestyles. A shining example is Jimmy Doyle, a 58-year-old from Kildavin, County Carlow, who completed the Dublin City Marathon after suffering a heart attack and undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery in early 2024.
Jimmy's rehabilitation journey began with supervised exercise, including treadmill sessions and participation in local runs such as Parkrun and the Hope and Dream Run, gradually rebuilding his strength and confidence. He credits the personalised guidance and encouragement from the Enniscorthy team for his safe and steady progress towards improved wellbeing.
Cardiac rehabilitation encompasses more than physical activity; it provides education on managing medication, nutrition, blood pressure, and emotional health, aiming to reduce future heart risks. Staff nurse Lisa Mahon emphasises the importance of having accessible services close to home, enabling patients like Jimmy to integrate rehabilitation into their daily routines. Operational lead Liz Murphy highlights how this community-based approach aligns with Sláintecare goals, delivering coordinated, specialist care earlier to improve outcomes and lessen hospital visits. Consultant cardiologist Dr Cyril James praises the dedicated team’s personalised attention, which, combined with Jimmy’s determination, has fostered lasting health improvements and independence.
