€10 million boost for digital creative innovation
Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD and Minister James Lawless TD have unveiled a €10 million Shared Island Digital Creative Industries Innovation Programme designed to enhance research and innovation across the island’s higher education sector. The initiative seeks to develop dynamic partnerships that combine expertise and infrastructure from institutions both North and South, focusing on digital creative disciplines.

The programme, running from 2027 to 2030, is funded by €4 million from the Government’s Shared Island Fund and €6 million from the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. Administered by the Higher Education Authority (HEA), it builds on the success of the North South Research Programme and complements other major investments such as the INSPIRE Research Infrastructure and Talent Programme.

Dr Vivienne Patterson, Head of Skills, Engagement and Statistics at the HEA, emphasised the programme’s role in supporting collaborative projects that will strengthen higher education capacity and industry engagement. The call for proposals is now open, with applications due by noon on 15 December 2026, and successful projects will be announced in early 2027.
