A major milestone in coastal renewal has been achieved with the official opening of Harbour Square, a fifteen million euro project designed to transform the waterfront of Balbriggan into a thriving community and commercial destination. The landmark redevelopment along Quay Street and the harbour area was jointly unveiled by the Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Tony Murphy, and the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne. Serving as the flagship initiative within the broader Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Programme, this extensive civic project covers nearly twenty thousand square metres and incorporates a multi-purpose plaza, linear park, and versatile spaces for festivals and markets.
The ambitious revitalisation efforts have breathed new life into the town by thoughtfully restoring heritage buildings, including the former RNLI Boathouse, alongside introducing modern commercial units and essential public amenities. Significant environmental enhancements to the River Bracken, coupled with improved pedestrian pathways, expansive green areas, and upcoming children's play facilities, ensure the district is exceptionally family-friendly and accessible. Funding for the works was secured through government regeneration grants and Fingal County Council, reflecting a unified commitment to sustainable urban development and community prosperity.
Local leaders and stakeholders have praised the collaborative vision that has guided the rejuvenation since its inception, noting that over a quarter of local residents contributed their ideas during initial consultations. Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly and Leadership Group chair Dr David Begg both emphasised that the enhanced infrastructure will instil renewed commercial confidence and attract vital investment.
