Voter.ie launched to simplify electoral registration process
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, has announced the launch of Voter.ie, a revamped digital platform designed to make it easier and quicker for the public to check and update their details on the electoral register. This development culminates years of effort to transform the electoral registration process into a more integrated and secure national system, while retaining the expertise of local authorities.

The system was developed under the Electoral Reform Act 2022 by Dublin City Council, acting as the lead authority, with full funding from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage amounting to €7.6 million between 2024 and 2026. The platform went live in May 2026, initially migrating the four Dublin local authorities, with all other local authorities completing migration by the end of September 2026.

Minister Browne expressed gratitude to the local government sector for their collaboration throughout the project, which included extensive data review and quality improvement efforts supported by nearly €10 million in funding over recent years. He emphasised that Budget 2027 will ensure continued support to maintain high-quality data and develop long-term capacity to sustain and enhance the electoral registration process. The new system replaces checktheregister.ie, consolidating all registration functions under Voter.ie, which has already processed over one million online applications since 2022.
