Ireland hosts European higher education leaders in Dublin
Senior higher education officials from EU Member States, EFTA countries, and the European Commission gathered in Dublin at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham on 22-23 October for the Directors-General meeting on Higher Education. This event, hosted by Ireland during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union, provided a platform to deliberate on the future priorities and collaborative efforts within the European Higher Education Area.

The agenda encompassed critical themes such as improving access and participation in higher education, advancing the Erasmus+ programme, developing European Universities Alliances, and enhancing STEM skills and AI fluency among students. An interactive plenary session, led by the OECD and the European Commission, highlighted a forthcoming report on policies aimed at strengthening advanced STEM skills in higher education, which was formally launched during the proceedings.

A key highlight was Ireland’s presentation of its Programme for Access to Higher Education (PATH) 4 Phase 2 initiative, dedicated to creating higher education opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Graduates from PATH 4 shared personal testimonies on how these programmes transformed their lives, with Minister Harkin recognising their accomplishments by presenting certificates. Both ministers emphasised the importance of widening participation, international cooperation, and preparing learners for emerging challenges including artificial intelligence and STEM development.
