Tánaiste Simon Harris is set to travel to Luxembourg for a two-day meeting of EU Economy and Finance Ministers. The gathering, taking place next week, will see Harris chair the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) as part of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
A central focus of the agenda will be the Market Integration and Supervision Package, a legislative reform aimed at removing barriers to cross-border investment. The package is designed to improve the competitiveness and efficiency of EU capital markets, ensuring European savings better finance local businesses. It remains a key priority for the Irish Presidency, which has invested significant effort in securing a Council agreement on the file.
Discussions will also revisit the competitiveness of the EU banking sector, with ministers providing guidance to the European Commission on priorities for next year’s banking reform package. Additionally, energy company windfall taxation will be addressed, following a joint request from six member states. Further details are available on the official website.
