Navan civil defence headquarters reopens following devastating fire
Minister for Defence Helen McEntee officially reopened the Meath Civil Defence headquarters in Navan, marking a triumphant recovery from a destructive blaze that struck the facility in late 2025. She was joined at the ceremony by Minister of State Thomas Byrne, alongside local officials and dedicated volunteers who gathered to celebrate the restored Mullaghboy Industrial Estate base.

The headquarters suffered extensive damage to its vehicle bay when the fire broke out on 21 December 2025, resulting in the loss of several emergency vehicles and crucial equipment. Fortunately, swift intervention by Meath Fire and Rescue Service prevented the flames from spreading further, ensuring there were no injuries. Civil Defence Officer Shane Quinn and Assistant Civil Defence Officer Patricia Carton subsequently spearheaded a remarkable restoration effort alongside local volunteers.

Minister McEntee praised the unwavering dedication of the team, noting that they managed to maintain vital public services within days of the disaster thanks to support from neighbouring units and Meath County Council. Minister Byrne echoed these sentiments, highlighting the incredible resilience shown by the volunteers in safeguarding the community throughout the challenging recovery period.
