Minister Richmond embarks on West Africa diplomatic tour
Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond TD, began a week-long official visit to Ghana and Senegal on 18 October 2026. His itinerary encompasses a range of engagements centred on political collaboration, development projects, diaspora relations, and the promotion of sports diplomacy.

In Ghana, Minister Richmond will co-chair a meeting of the EU Sahel Special Envoys alongside Birgitte Markussen, the EU Special Representative for the Sahel. This forum is vital for coordinating efforts among EU member states and regional partners to address ongoing instability, terrorism, and humanitarian crises in the Sahel region. The Minister will also visit the Irish Aid-funded UN Humanitarian Response Depot in Accra and engage with Irish Aid fellowship recipients and local Irish community members. These activities reinforce the strong bilateral ties between Ireland and Ghana, which recently re-established a resident embassy in Dublin following Deputy Foreign Minister James Gyakye Quayson’s visit in September 2026.

In Senegal, the Minister’s programme includes a visit to Ireland’s newest embassy in francophone West Africa, inaugurated in 2023. He will observe Irish Aid and European Union co-funded initiatives focused on climate action, healthcare accessibility, youth participation, and women’s empowerment. A key highlight is the emphasis on sports diplomacy, with Minister Richmond attending an event at the Irish Ambassador’s residence celebrating Ireland and Senegal’s leadership in this field, especially ahead of the Dakar Youth Olympic Games 2026. The event also spotlights projects supporting women through sport and vocational training linked to the upcoming Olympic event, where three young Irish athletes will compete.
