Irish presidency outlines climate focus for COP31
Minister Darragh O'Brien, Ireland's minister for climate, energy and the environment, met with EU Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra in Dublin to discuss the EU and Irish Presidency’s climate priorities ahead of the United Nations climate conference in Turkey.

The discussion centred on five key focus areas identified by the Irish Presidency and the EU for the November summit: implementation matters, the Paris Agreement as the core framework, the importance of multilateral collaboration, cumulative progress across successive conferences, and the need to prioritise clean electrification for climate, energy security and competitiveness.

Speaking after the meeting, Minister O'Brien said he was delighted to welcome the commissioner and stressed the importance of translating negotiated text into real‑world impact, adding that the collaboration will continue with EU and international partners as the conference approaches. Commissioner Hoekstra echoed this sentiment, urging accelerated global clean electrification and the strengthening of multilateral cooperation to turn commitments into concrete progress.
