Minister McEntee reaffirms Ireland's commitment to international justice
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Helen McEntee TD, hosted the President of the International Criminal Court, Judge Tomoko Akane, at Iveagh House this afternoon. The discussions focused on the mounting political challenges currently confronting the Court, specifically addressing the recent sanctions and restrictive measures targeted at President Akane and other senior ICC officials.

During the meeting, Minister McEntee emphasised that the independence of the Court is a fundamental requirement of international law, stating that any efforts to obstruct its functions are entirely incompatible with the rule of law. The two leaders also reviewed the progress of ongoing international investigations and discussed the strategic importance of achieving universal adoption of the Rome Statute to bolster global accountability mechanisms.

Following the engagement, Minister McEntee confirmed that Ireland will leverage its upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union to rally international support for the Court. She reiterated that the state remains steadfast in its resolve to safeguard the ICC’s operational integrity and to ensure that justice is pursued for victims of the world's most grave human rights violations.
