Yesterday, Minister McEntee had the privilege of presenting UNIFIL medals to members of the Irish Defence Forces currently deployed in Southern Lebanon. This ceremony marked a significant moment as Ireland’s nearly five-decade-long peacekeeping role in the region begins to draw to a close.

Operating in a highly volatile environment characterised by persistent conflict and hardship for civilians, Irish peacekeepers have consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism and bravery. Their ongoing support for local communities and contribution to regional stability reflects the highest ideals of Irish service.

Today, Minister McEntee will meet with key Lebanese leaders, including the President, Justice Minister, and Foreign Minister, to discuss matters of regional peace, humanitarian challenges, and the future following the troop reduction. She will also reaffirm Ireland’s commitment to seeking justice for the killing of Private Seán Rooney, underscoring the country’s dedication to accountability.
