Thomas Byrne, minister of state for European affairs and defence, welcomed Cristina Gherasimov, Moldova’s deputy prime minister for European integration and chief EU negotiator, to Government Buildings in Dublin on 30 September.
Byrne said he greatly welcomed the chance to meet Gherasimov again, reaffirming Ireland’s strong commitment to EU enlargement as a priority of its EU presidency and noting the importance of securing further progress in the coming months. He praised Moldova as a frontrunner in the accession process, recalling his chairing of the third Accession Conference in July that opened Cluster 6 on External Relations, and pledged continued collaboration with all Member States to open the remaining clusters.
Having visited Chișinău earlier this year, Byrne highlighted the impressive reforms Moldova is undertaking despite hybrid threats, and announced he will speak at an event on 1 October at the Institute of International and European Affairs, where Gherasimov will join him to discuss Rule of Law reforms as part of the EU accession journey.
