Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne TD, delivered the opening address at the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) annual conference held in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan. The conference, linked to the Irish EU Presidency, was hosted in partnership with the East Border Region (EBR), which commemorated its 50th year.

Themed ‘Cross Border Regions as Catalysts for Peace and Stability’, the event showcased the positive and lasting impact of cross-border organisations like the AEBR and EBR in fostering peace and reconciliation across Europe. Minister Byrne praised the crucial role of such cooperation, reflecting on how the Irish border has evolved from a symbol of division to a corridor of collaboration and innovation over the past five decades.

During his speech, Minister Byrne highlighted the Irish EU Presidency’s priorities and welcomed the forthcoming EU-UK summit. He underscored the Presidency’s slogan, Ní neart go cur le chéile, meaning 'there is strength in unity', as embodying the spirit of European cooperation that drives progress and creates opportunities for all citizens.
