Government unveils ambitious rural development plan
The Government unveiled the latest iteration of its rural development strategy, Our Rural Future 2026-2031, on Tuesday, 27 October 2026. This new policy outlines 34 key commitments designed to strengthen rural communities, promote economic growth, and enhance the overall quality of life throughout rural Ireland.

Building on the progress achieved by the previous plan spanning 2021 to 2025, the policy adopts a whole-of-Government approach to address infrastructure, services, and support needs in rural areas. It focuses on five strategic pillars: investing in rural infrastructure, improving access to public services, supporting economic development, fostering resilient and inclusive communities, and contributing to climate action and environmental sustainability.

Government officials, including the Taoiseach and ministers responsible for rural development, enterprise, and community affairs, emphasised the importance of rural Ireland’s role in national identity and economic prosperity. An accompanying Action Plan details practical measures for delivery over the first half of the policy period, with annual progress reports ensuring transparency. Regional engagement events will take place to involve communities and provide information on funding and supports, aiming for a tailored approach that recognises the diverse needs of rural and Gaeltacht areas alike.
