Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan, is currently in Munich at the invitation of German Federal Minister of the Interior, Alexander Dobrindt. In his role as Chair of the Justice and Home Affairs Council, Minister O’Callaghan is engaging with EU counterparts, Commissioner Magnus Brunner, and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to evaluate the efficacy of current migration strategies.
Addressing the progress of the EU Pact on migration and asylum, Minister O’Callaghan noted a positive trend in reduced irregular arrivals and increased returns to third countries. However, he emphasised that the focus must remain on the uniform implementation of the Pact and the upcoming Returns Regulation, which is scheduled for formal adoption at the JHA Council meeting in Luxembourg next week.
Looking ahead, the Minister intends to leverage the insights gained from these discussions to advance two specific proposals. These initiatives will target improved readmission rates and the development of early warning systems to anticipate migratory movements. Further information regarding the Department’s ongoing policy developments is available on the official government website.
