Government reports major progress on national infrastructure delivery
Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers has presented the second quarterly update on the Accelerating Infrastructure Action Plan, revealing that the Government successfully completed 95 per cent of its scheduled targets. The initiative, which incorporates 30 distinct actions, is designed to dismantle long-standing regulatory and legislative barriers that have historically hindered national development. Recent successes include the enactment of the Critical Infrastructure Bill 2026, which has already facilitated the fast-tracking of nine major projects deemed vital for the Irish economy.

Legislative momentum continues with the signing of the Planning and Development (Amendment) Act 2026, which introduces significant reforms to environmental assessments and planning permissions. Furthermore, the Government has authorised the drafting of the Strategic Environmental Assessment Bill 2026 to harmonise cross-sectoral frameworks. These systemic changes are already yielding tangible results, notably saving 26 weeks on the Waterford Wastewater Treatment Plant and shaving a full year off the timeline for the Greater Dublin Drainage project, a development expected to support the construction of 185,000 homes.

Operational improvements are being driven by the Joint Utilities and Transport Clearing House, a new body established to resolve inter-agency bottlenecks and streamline licensing requirements. Minister Chambers emphasised that this collaborative approach between local authorities, utility providers, and transport agencies is essential for meeting climate goals and boosting national competitiveness. Further information regarding these ongoing reforms and specific project updates is available on the official government website.
