Ministers announce major funding package for rural Ireland
Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, alongside Minister of State Jerry Buttimer TD, have unveiled a comprehensive €628 million budget package for 2027. This significant allocation is designed to sustain and expand critical schemes that support the vitality of rural regions, Gaeltacht areas, and offshore island communities throughout the country.

The investment is segmented into three primary pillars: €208 million for rural development, €260 million for community initiatives, and €160 million dedicated to the Gaeltacht, the Irish language, and island services. Key highlights include a funding boost for the LEADER programme to €43 million, an increase in the Community Services Programme to assist with rising operational costs, and long-term financial stability for the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP). Furthermore, the package provides for the Town and Village Renewal Scheme and supports vital transport links for residents living on offshore islands.

Speaking on the announcement, Minister Calleary emphasised that the funding will underpin the objectives of the forthcoming 'Our Rural Future' policy, fostering a resilient rural Ireland. Minister Buttimer highlighted the importance of securing permanent funding for social inclusion efforts, noting that the increased budget will allow for the expansion of services to new community organisations. Detailed information regarding the specific allocation of these funds and the various programmes involved is available on the official government website.
