Westmeath County Council initiated civil engineering operations to install vital flood attenuation infrastructure along Retreat Road in Athlone. This local authority project was advanced in response to ongoing concerns and representations raised by elected members representing the Athlone-Moate Municipal District, who prioritised the recurring weather challenges faced by residents and road users.
The engineering scheme centres on constructing underground storage capacity designed to handle high volumes of stormwater during prolonged periods of heavy rainfall. Additionally, the project incorporates sustainable, nature-based drainage features that improve local environmental outcomes while bolstering long-term resilience against extreme weather events.
Funding for the scheme was bolstered by a €60,000 contribution from the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO). The initiative was designed by municipal engineers with assistance from the Council's Active Travel Team to safeguard infrastructure and improve safety for the entire community.
