Storm Boelo prompts urgent severe weather meetings
The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM) has been holding ongoing meetings of the National Severe Weather and Flood Coordination Group in response to the impending arrival of Storm Boelo. The storm is forecast to impact much of Ireland this weekend with intense wind and rain, particularly affecting the northwest, west, and southwest.

Met Éireann updated officials that Storm Boelo will track northwest of the country, bringing gale-force westerly winds with damaging gusts to counties Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo. An Orange wind warning is active for these areas from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. Meanwhile, Kerry faces an Orange rain warning on Saturday, where heavy rainfall on already saturated ground raises the risk of severe flooding to homes and businesses.

Rivers across western and southwestern catchments such as the Bandon-Ilen, Blackwater, Lee, and Shannon Estuary are expected to rise, potentially causing out-of-bank flooding. Coastal areas in the northwest will also face heightened flood risks due to strong onshore winds, high tides, and storm surges between Saturday afternoon and early Sunday. Local authorities remain vigilant, with severe weather assessment teams activated and prepared to respond promptly. Keith Leonard, head of NDFEM, urged caution, advising people to avoid coastal zones and follow all official advice amid these dangerous conditions.
