Homes and businesses in Gaoth Dobhair will soon see improvements in their water supply as Uisce Éireann embarks on a major infrastructure upgrade. The project involves replacing almost 900 metres of deteriorated water mains along the L1593, from Mín Uí Bhaoill Church to Gillespie’s Quarry, to address leakage and bolster network reliability.
This initiative forms part of Uisce Éireann’s broader National Leakage Reduction Programme and includes installing new water service connections from the public mains directly to customer property boundaries. The work will be carried out by Farrans and is scheduled for completion by December 2026. To facilitate the works, traffic management measures including road closures will be implemented, with local access maintained and diversions clearly signposted to minimise disruption.
Patricia Lowry, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, emphasised the significance of the project, stating it will reduce water lost through leaks and improve supply resilience for Gaoth Dobhair residents and businesses. With Ireland’s extensive underground water network facing ongoing challenges, this upgrade represents a vital step in tackling leakage, which has been reduced nationally from 49% in 2014 to 36%.
